If you see either of these statuses in the management platform or on the charging station itself, it means a charging session has been paused or stopped. The two statuses have different causes — this article explains what each one means and when you need to take action.
Suspended EVSE
Suspended EVSE is an OCPP status that indicates the pause signal is coming from the charging station itself. This can happen for several reasons:
The station is waiting for the vehicle to be ready — the car has not yet responded to the charge request.
There is insufficient power available to start or continue the session — for example, because a load management system is temporarily limiting output.
The station has detected something in the vehicle or the connection that prevents it from starting or continuing to charge safely.
There is a fault or defect in the charging station itself.
If you regularly see a Suspended EVSE status and charging is not starting, this may indicate a fault in the station. We recommend having an installer inspect it.
Suspended EV
Suspended EV is an OCPP status that indicates the pause signal is coming from the vehicle — not the charging station. This is a normal status and does not necessarily mean there is a fault. It can occur in the following situations:
The vehicle's battery is full or has reached a configured charge limit set by the driver.
A smart charging service has temporarily paused charging — for example Tibber, Octopus Agile/Go, or Enel X JuiceNet, which optimise charging based on energy prices or grid load.
A load management system has temporarily reduced power based on grid conditions or tariff logic — for example Alfen ELA smart load management.
Important: the management platform cannot show which smart charging service or load management system triggered the pause. If you are unsure why the status appeared, check the settings of any smart charging services connected to the vehicle or location first.
When do you need to take action?
Suspended EV due to a full battery or charge limit: no action needed — the vehicle stopped charging on its own.
Suspended EV caused by a smart charging service: no action needed — charging will resume automatically once the service allows it.
Suspended EVSE when charging should be starting: try restarting the station from the dashboard.
